A military, also known collectively as the armed forces, is a heavily armed, highly organized force primarily devoted to war. It is usually officially authorized and maintained by a sovereign state, with its members recognizable from their different military uniforms. It can consist of one or more branches of the military such as army, navy, air force, space force, marines, or coast guard. The main military task is usually interpreted as the defense of the state and its interests against outside armed threats.

In broad use, the terms “armed forces” and “military” are often considered the same, although in technical use sometimes differences are made where a country’s armed forces can include both military and other paramilitary forces. There are various forms of irregular military force, not recognized state property; although they have many similar attributes to regular military forces, they are less often referred to simply as “military”.

What Is Military Time?

Military time is a way of knowing the time with 24 hours, where one day starts at 0 hours and ends at 24 hours. This is in contrast to the most common 12-hour hours we use in the United States. The 12-hour clock restarts at noon at 1 p.m., while military hours continue to count midday to 1300 hours and beyond. You can see in the image how the watch is formatted differently to accommodate all 24 hours, not just 12.
